He’s called a servant (slave) of the high priest; his name, Malchus. Remember him? He’s the one in the crowd that came with Judas and the chief priests to the garden to arrest Jesus. When they laid their hands on Jesus, Peter drew his sword and cut of Malchus’ right ear. Jesus rebuked Peter for doing so, as Jesus knew what his Father had called Him to do. Jesus then touched Malchus’ ear and healed him.
Let’s imagine what must have been going through Malchus’ mind at that time: He was part of the crowd who came to arrest Jesus – probably convinced he was doing the right thing; after all Jesus needed to be put on trial – He needed to be put to death for claiming to be the Son of God. He probably heard about all the things Jesus had supposedly done, but it meant nothing to him – until now! His ear was cut off – he was in pain – and instead of Jesus trying to get away, He gently touched Malchus and healed his ear. “How could he do that? Is He truly the Son of God? Have I been wrong in my thinking?” Did Malchus become a believer, a child of God? Scripture doesn’t tell us. I tend to think he did. I think he realized that Jesus was truly whom He claimed to be and that he had been touched by the hand of God!
What about you? If you are aren’t a believer, what’s it going to take to change your mind and heart? Some miracle? God could do that, but probably won’t. He wants you to come in faith, believing He is whom He claims to be – the Savior of the world – the precious Son of God and that He loves you so much He was willing to die for you. It’s time to believe – to trust Him as your Savior and Lord. That’s what it will take.
