Have you ever placed a scarecrow in your garden? Sometimes they can look scary, sometimes not. Sometimes they are just plain cute. At first, the birds and critters may keep their distance from your garden and your scarecrow, but when they realize they are motionless they venture closer; birds even landing on its head! Your garden isn’t protected any longer.
I was surprised to find that the word “scarecrow” is actually found in the ESV version of the Bible (Jer. 10:5). God compared manmade idols to “scarecrows.” God’s people had turned to idols and worshipped them. God had warned them this was wrong and that there would be consequences and judgment if they continued in that practice. He tried to show them how foolish it was to trust and pray to them. He said: they are just carved pieces of wood, covered with silver and gold, they cannot move, they cannot hear, they cannot speak, they cannot walk. But He, (God) is the living, true God, there is none like Him. He is the creator of heaven and earth; creator of mankind, creator of everything. He hears us, He knows us, He loves us, He cares for us, and yes, He speaks to us through His Word.
I hope you aren’t trusting in anything like a scarecrow or any idol you have set up even in your mind. They cannot help you or protect you in any way. There is no hope in them. Our God, who made you, wants you to trust in Him alone.
(Check out chapters 44, 45 in Isaiah and see how many times it says, there is no other God.)
