Guess I’m getting personal today; but here’s my question–What are you wearing? What kind of clothing did you put on today? Probably something to keep you warm in this bitter cold weather (at least here in western New York)! Actually that’s not what I mean.
Spiritually, what have you put on? Colossians 3 tells us first of all what we should put off and then gives us a list of several things we should put on: mercy, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering, forbearance, forgiveness and love. In another book of the Bible (Ephesians) in chapter 6 we are also told to put on some other clothing: the armor of God, because we aren’t fighting against flesh and blood, but against the wiles of the devil himself. When we “put these things on” we will walk victorious with our Lord.
I want to suggest just one more thing which should be a priority for us each day. It is actually the title of an old great hymn; “Take the Name of Jesus with You.” So after we “dress for the day,” let’s walk with this precious name on the forefront of our mind and our tongue, knowing there is power just speaking His name.
Think about the words to this great hymn:
Take the name of Jesus with you, child of sorrow and of woe;
It will joy and comfort give you–Take it, then, wher-e’er you go.
Take the name of Jesus ever, As a shield from ev’ry snare;
If temptation round you gather, Breathe that holy name in prayer.
Precious name, Oh how sweet. Hope of earth and joy of heav’n. Precious name, Oh how sweet. Hope of earth and joy of heav’ n.
Whatever need you have and whenever you have that need–breathe that precious name and know He hears you and will answer, because there is power in that great name of JESUS!
