Isn’t there something soothing about a lit candle? And if it’s scented, it can even add to our enjoyment. They come in all shapes and sizes and many are encased in a glass jar with a lid. It’s been interesting to watch when I’ve placed a lid over a lit candle to put it out. The little flame often grows smaller and smaller, but just before it goes completely out, it makes a little burst as if it is reaching out for more oxygen to keep burning. It’s like it is crying out, “Don’t put me out; let me keep burning!”

That’s what Jesus wants us to do. He says we are the light of the world. He doesn’t want us to be like a candle under a bushel; but like one on a candlestick where we can be a blessing to those around us and to bring glory to our Father in heaven. That’s our purpose.
