Do any of you get weary from all the things you have to do? There doesn’t seem to be enough hours in the day to get everything done? It almost sounds like two different situations or persons in the verse, and Jesus is calling both of them to come to Him so He can give them rest. We all labor to one degree or another and at times it is a struggle. Then there are those who are carrying a heavy burden – they are simply overloaded. I think this happens more often today in our lives than we’d like to admit. So, what can we do?
Jesus says, “Take my yoke upon you.” We have a hard time understanding this in our day and age. But in earlier days, a farmer would pair up two animals with a yoke – one stronger and more experienced so the younger could learn and wouldn’t be so burdened by itself. Jesus wants us to be yoked with Him. He doesn’t want us burdened or struggling on our own. He wants us to stay close to Him, walk with Him, learn from Him, lean on Him; let Him help us pull our load. As we do this (staying yoked to Jesus) He says “you will find rest for your souls.” I need this. How about you?
