Today I’m sharing a devotion from one of my books, “Morning Walks with God,” (devotion on May 25). I hope you all have a blessed day.
An Altar of Remembrance
Memorial Day—it’s a day to remember and honor the war veterans; a day to remember and honor our loved ones who have gone before us, as I do my precious marine, Autry. Across America, there are stones of memorial. In South Dakota, the Mount Rushmore national memorial mountain of stone honors four US presidents: Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, and Roosevelt. In other places there are bronze markers, stone markers, historical markers, and monuments to our loved ones—all to help us remember.
In Joshua 4, there were two sets of stones to remind the people of God’s mighty power, His love for His people, His mercy, and to remind them to teach their children these truths.
If we were to build a monument or an altar of remembrance to God, what would be written on our stones? Would some of them say, “God is our Creator,” “Jesus Christ is the door to eternal life,” “The Bible is God’s Word and our guidebook,” “God is holy—we are sinful,” or “God’s salvation is free?”
Our freedom from sin doesn’t cost us a thing. It cost the Lord Jesus Christ everything—His life, His blood. Yes, we need and want to remember the fallen, but we need to remember all that God is and what He has done for us. In turn, God remembers us, but He doesn’t need a stone memorial, for He says:
“Behold, I have graven you on the palms of my hands.” Isaiah 49:16
He’ll never forget us.
