The Deadly “D’s”

Scripture: Joshua 1:9, Psalm 139, Phil. 4:8, I John 4:4

There probably isn’t a one of us who hasn’t had some kind of a disappointment in the last week–anything from a failed new recipe to someone else getting a promotion ahead of you or getting recognition you should have received.

Some disappointments we may be able to shrug off, but others have a way of boring into our minds and festering into something more devastating.

THING ABOUT THIS:

>Disappointments are common to everyone, but not everyone handles them in the same way.  We can accept them as “God’s appointments” and learn what God is trying to teach us through them or we can let them be the beginning of a downward spiral in our life.

>Discouragement (dishearten, deprive of self-confidence, deterred from an undertaking) follows and robs one of self-confidence.  Perhaps this person no longer thinks he/she is capable of performing anything worthwhile any more and would rather just give up.

>Depression will follow quickly if the others are not put in check.  By this point one is sinking in spirit, sad, feels lower in value, dejected and again, if not checked, will spiral to the result of it being:

Debilitating–to bring one to the point of not being able to function; it weakens one physically as well as spiritually to the point of impairing and making faint.

Not a pretty picture, is it?

REMEMBER THIS:

Satan is a robber of “abundant life” (I’ve written about this before), and nothing will make him happier than to see you swallowed up in this downward spiral.  It’s time you (we) send him on a hike!

Do you remember the song, “God Will Take Care of You?” by  Civilla D. Martin?

Be not dismayed (discouraged), whate’er betide;

God will take care of you.

Beneath His wings of love abide;

God will take care of you.

Will He take care of you?  Of course He will.

“Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be dismayed (discouraged): for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”  Joshua 1:9

You are special to God; He created you (Psalm 139) and He has a plan for you and He will help you fulfill that plan.  We can’t let the words of other people or our circumstances dictate what direction we are to go or how we feel.  Remember Satan seeks to destroy who we are and what God wants us to do and to be.  If God has called you to something it doesn’t matter what others may say or do.  God is on YOUR side!

Another hymn by Helen H. Lemmel says:

Turn your eyes upon Jesus

Look full in His wonderful face

And the things of earth will grow strangely dim

In the light of His glory and grace.

I cannot stress enough to keep your eyes on the Lord, not on yourself or your disappointments.  There is power in the Word of God.

Think of things that are true, honest, just, pure, lovely, of good report and virtue.  Phil. 4:8.

“Greater is He that is in you than he that is in the world.”

I John 4:4

As soon as a disappointment hits you square in the face, thank God for it and trust Him to show you great and mighty things that you can’t even imagine right now.

Don’t let the Deadly “D’s” run your life.  God is GREATER!
