“Stayed upon Jehovah, Hearts are fully blest”–The wonderful hymn, “Like a River Glorious” by Frances R. Havergal, starts its chorus with these very words and what a marvelous truth that is. The only way any of us can be truly blessed, is when our minds are completely focused or fixed (stayed) upon our God (Jehovah).
How many of you like to be beside a river or stream and just enjoy the peaceful sound of the flowing water? Perhaps there is nothing so soothing and peaceful as that. God’s peace is compared to that in this hymn.
THINK ABOUT THIS:
Here are the words of the first verse and chorus of this hymn:
Like a river glorious is God’s perfect peace.
Over all victorious In its bright increase;
Perfect, yet it floweth Fuller every day;
Perfect, yet it groweth Deeper all the way.
Stayed upon Jehovah,
hearts are fully blest,
Finding as he promised;
Perfect peace and rest.
No matter what you may be facing today, if you turn your thoughts from your problem and fix them upon the Lord Jesus Christ, He will give you peace.
The second verse of the hymn tells us we are hidden in the hollow of His blessed hand. When foes (enemies) be around us; and as a result worries and cares vie for our attention–again turn (stay) your mind on Jehovah–you will find peace and rest.
You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You; because he trusts in You. Trust in the LORD forever: for in the LORD JEHOVAH is everlasting strength. Isa. 26:3,4
The third verse says:
Every joy or trial falleth from above,
Traced upon our dial By the Sun of Love;
We may trust Him fully:
All for us to do;
They who trust Him wholly
Find Him wholly true.
We are not unique in our problems and trials. Oh, they are not all the same, but what we need to realize is that we all face them and all are allowed by God for a purpose perhaps only He knows! But we can take any bitter, hateful, angry, disappointed or discouraged attitude and trust God wholly with our minds and hearts and He will help us through.
NOTICE A FEW WORDS:
We may trust Him (FULLY) – Why? Simply because He is God–He is Jehovah (a faithful, loving God).
They who trust Him (WHOLLY) – it can’t be just a part of us. We need to yield our all (our very being to Him).
Find Him (WHOLLY) true- He has been, He is, He always will be true to His word.
He promised you peace–you will find that perfect peace and rest.
The composer had written a letter to another hymn writer quoting the following verse:
“We have peace with God.” Rom. 5:1
He said “this peace is ours already, purchased for us, made for us, sealed for us, pledged to us–by the word of the Father and the precious blood of Jesus.” It is not only peace that God promises, but perfect peace–perfected, completed in Christ.
May you remain “STAYED UPON JEHOVAH!”
